Sensible Ways to Longer Life through Healthy Eating

There is virtually no doubt that eating habits can contribute to health or to disease. Foods can help cure illness, or they can lead to medical problems. Proper nutrition leads to efficient bodily operation, contributes to human energy, increases brain function, and leads to a longer life.

The dilemma is that not everyone, not even all medical experts, agree on just what it is that constitutes proper nutrition. Even the United Nations agencies that seek to address the problems of food production and food delivery to the world's population have no single answer. What is clear is that the problems of hunger, malnutrition, food-related illness and disease, overweight and obesity are not easily solved. Nor are the associated concerns of agriculture, food safety and food waste.

Ways to Achieve Personal Balance

Holistic nutrition is a growing field, relying on the natural preventive and healing properties of foods to ensure health and vitality. The U.S. surgeon general has stated that two-thirds of American mortality is diet-related, according to the Nutrition Therapy Institute. There is undeniable evidence that what we eat can contribute to heart disease, cancer and diabetes. There is also an increasing body of evidence that specific foods, herbs and spices can be employed to combat, minimize, eliminate and treat a number of conditions and problems.

While the basics of nutrition are well-known, scientific investigators almost weekly discover new properties in the foods we eat. Previously accepted dietary recommendations have recently been reversed, and the verdict is still out on recommended consumption of some foods -- notably coffee, certain fats, wine and spirits, salt and even some fruits.

What Most of Us Know

Most Americans acknowledge that eating right is a large part of living well and being healthy. A return to reliance on simple foods, home-cooked meals, proper exercise, fresh air and alternative healing goes hand in hand with modern non-invasive chiropractic treatments, more interest in yoga and meditation, acupuncture, and a better diet.

We at APEX Wellness Center emphasize the benefits of nutrition, exercise and posture, particularly for our pediatric patients. We are dedicated in our practice not only to relieving pain resulting from joint problems and spinal misalignment with gentle chiropractic procedures, but we take a pro-active approach to health, and we treat the whole person. We will work with you to develop a personal wellness approach to keep you feeling young, energetic and fit, no matter how old you are.

The Future of Real Food

Science fiction of a generation ago touted the idea of "food capsules" that would replicate any desirable food product. That somewhat disconcerting method of ordering meals has been replaced by a return to backyard farming, buying at farmers markets, eating fresh, seasonal, locally-produced food, and a phrase popularized by writer Michael Pollan: "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants."

Rather than strict diets, the trend is toward healthy exercise, a moderate and common sense approach to eating, and a return to home cooking.

We like the way the future looks.
