Graston Technique

Graston Technique at Apex Wellness Center

Do even the simplest motions produce chronic pain and stiffness? Sometimes these symptoms can be attributed to acute injuries or degenerative conditions within a joint, but many such cases stem from old injuries, tight connective tissues, scar tissue buildup or chronic strain. Here at Apex Wellness Center in Dallas, we have a powerful set of tools that can help you attain natural pain relief. Namely, the 6 specialized tools used in a healing modality known as the Graston Technique.

What Is the Graston Technique?

The Graston Technique is a method for finding and releasing areas of tissue confinement. Your body employs several kinds of soft tissues, including muscles, tendons, and ligaments, to make movement possible. These tissues are encased by yet another form of connective tissue known as fascia. When any of these tissues become injured, scarred, or otherwise constrained, moving the affected body part may be extremely painful or even impossible. In many cases, the body's attempts to repair itself following an injury lead to abnormal scar tissue accumulation that essentially glues neighboring tissues together. These accumulations, which are known as adhesions, can severely restrict range of motion. Other conditions related to chronically tight or strained tissues include:

  • Achilles tendinosis
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Shin splints
  • Tennis elbow
  • Golfer's elbow
  • Chronic back or neck pain

Graston Technique is a form of instrument-assisted tissue manipulation designed to treat these and other conditions. A set of specialized metal tools are shaped to help the practitioner with both diagnosis and treatment phases. Running the instruments over the affected areas can help us feel scar tissue and other resistance in underlying tissues. The tools can then be moved across the treatment site in various patterns, going against the grain of the tissue fibers to help break up muscle knots and adhesions.

A Powerful Supplement to Chiropractic Care

Our Dallas chiropractor, Dr. Erin Stark Calaway, routinely recommends the Graston Technique in support of other all-natural pain management and sports injury treatment techniques, including chiropractic care. These two modalities, in particular, make for a natural combination. By freeing up those constrained tissues, we make it easier for your musculoskeletal system to absorb and accept chiropractic adjustments. By the same token, years of tightness may have pulled bones or joints out of alignment, a problem we can fix through a series of chiropractic treatments.
