Safe Prenatal Exercises: Guidance from APEX Wellness Center

When you're expecting a baby, you may find yourself facing some concerns as to how you can safely optimize your health and wellness during the nine months of pregnancy. Even if you know that regular exercise can play a critical role in keeping both you and your baby healthy, you may be worried that the wrong kind of exercise routine might do more harm than good. Let's look at some of the exercises you can and should consider during your pregnancy, and how they can fit into a larger program of prenatal wellness at APEX Wellness Center in Dallas.

Smart Exercise Choices for Pregnant Women

Contrary to what you might think, most of the exercise options out there are perfectly safe for pregnant women when performed within reasonably limits. Some of the least demanding forms of exercises can actually provide some of the most valuable benefits. These options include:

  • Walking - Walking is a very safe form of exercise that burns calories, boosts metabolism, maintains leg strength, and promotes cardiovascular wellness. You can walk regularly through all three trimesters of pregnancy.
  • Swimming - Swimming provides excellent cardiovascular benefits for pregnant women. It has the great advantage of supporting part of your weight, compensating for the weight gain that often causes musculoskeletal strain.
  • Cycling - Cycling gets you off of your feet while giving your heart, lungs, and legs a safe workout. A stationary bike is a safer choice, since you want to avoid falls or traumatic injuries while pregnant.
  • Low-impact aerobics - There are many supervised low-impact aerobics classes that can accommodate pregnant women.

If you're dealing with bleeding issues, heart disease, gestational diabetes or hypertension, problems involving the cervix, or a history of miscarriage, you need to be extremely careful about which exercises you choose. There are some types of exercises that all pregnant women should generally avoid. These include intense weight lifting, horseback riding, and long-distance running.
